This agency has protected nearly two hundred and twenty million acres of public land. In 1905, he also invited scientists to the White House for a conference on the conservation of our country’s natural resources.

James Madison

James Madison was an important figure in American history. He served as the chief author of the First Amendment and the Bill of Rights, and was a staunch advocate for freedom of speech, religion, and the press. As a member of the newly formed House of Representatives, Madison authored the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, codifying fundamental human and civil rights against unreasonable government authority.

A born to a wealthy Virginia planter family, James Madison studied at the College of New Jersey, which later became Princeton University. A new college president, John Witherspoon, had the goal of cultivating the spirit of liberty in students, and he took steps to open the curriculum to currents of dissent.
